2007 OSTERLEY 2ND XI'S MATCH REPORTS

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIENDS..........

Image:

OCC’s 2nd XI, in their last league game against IGCC were playing for the Middlesex Division 1 title and to make 2nd XI club history. To achieve both, OCC needed 13 points from the last game against neighbours Indian Gymkhana. The squad\team this season has been made up from 28 players (therefore more socialising\friends), an effect of having 5 sides playing on Saturday in two different leagues.

During the last 5 games, only one team scored 150, others bowled out for less than 100, leaving OCC an automatic choice once the toss was won at IGCC. As per usual, Aman, Ata and Shakeel shared the wickets as IGCC were bowled out for 40 and runs chased down in 6 overs. 30 points for another win, nearly amassing 400 points, during a water logged season.

As a new member at OCC alongside a dozen or so friends from British Airways, Windsor etc, we weren’t sure what to expect, with a new ground\club house being prepared a month before the season started!! The club and ground have turned out to be the best experience in the last 10 years, surpassing times even when I\we won the Div 1 title a couple of times at our previous club (joined as a colt). A happy environment and can’t be bad when our teas are rated the best in the league, also curries served after the match in the club house!!!

I can’t think of any other club that has won 6 titles in 1 year (Middx Div 1 1st & 2nd, Middx\IBEX cup and Surrey 20\20 for 1st & 2nds). The success has come from TEAMING TOGETHER and OCC’s members feeling so passionate about THEIR club. The planning, intention is to go further with the phenomenal colts potential, local newspapers coverage, heavy weight sponsors lending their support in the year’s to come and most importantly YOU.

Nadeem Chowdhry – Osterley CC 2nd XI Captain.

Early morning parathas give Osterley strength to cruise past Birkbeck.

Image:

The captain decided the paratha’s proverb was going to be the secret weapon, asking all players to arrive at the club for a brunch made of omelettes, potatoes and paratha’s. The kitchen was in fine form as OCC players sat on the boundary benches eating, watching the Birkebeck team warming up and preparing their battle plan on the table’s edge.
Nadeem (OCC) asked Mazhar (BCCC) what he would like to do as a goodwill gesture, ‘we will bat’, so BCCC strategy had changed from all season and clearly concerned a win might not be possible against OCC and extra draw points would be enough to take the title.
The M&S combination of Mandip and Sarvesh was delightful as the batsmen were firmly pin down in their creases hardly playing a shot. As Mandip’s left arm (ala Wasim Akram) swung and cut the ball forced a rash shot and in full horizontal flight Sarvesh pluck the ball out of the air at point, to the disbelief of the batsman.
Mandip and Sarvesh had bowled tight lines and lengths and the batters were trying to counter attack, therefore the second M&S bowling partnership of Mano and Shakeel began to tear into Birkbeck. Shakeel taking 6 for 31 off 21 overs and the pick of the bowlers for the second week running. Without J.Iqbals 69 (2 extra lives), Birkebeck would not have scored 100 but did scramble to 159 all out.
With the BCCC extra fired up from taking an early wicket, A. Haider began with a wild bouncer at the other end and giving the new man plenty of ‘verbals’, to the extent the umpire had to step in. The next 4 balls all went to the boundary as Haider just lost it, as the first boundary went screaming 200 yards past square leg, the second almost a flat 6 over extra cover, the third through point and the fourth back over his head – as they say, let the ball do the talking.
With OCC cruising at 95 for 2 in 15 overs (Aman’s solid opening vigil), the dreaded series of LBW’s began, one after another and another and so forth, to the point both captains and umpires gathered for a brief chat. OCC now on 105 for 6 and BCCC firmly on top, it was down to Mandip and Nadeem to emulate the Bopra and Broad act. A partnership taking the scored to 147 by clever dabs and running put OCC back in the game but as both fell Nadeem and Mandip were replaced by Wakeel and Ata. These two have won games for OCC with 100’s and 5 wicket hauls but this was when it all counted.
A hundred or so spectators felt the pressure and tension off the field and players almost glowing as the sun set, Habib came in to bowl his thunder bolts, appealing for LBW when the ball was cleaning smacked to extra cover. Some clever dabs by Wakeel and Ata took the score to 153 for 8. OCC having recently won a last ball thriller against Hampstead last week, held their nerve and the classy Ata hammered the quickie over his head for a boundary, 157. The fielders were quiet but the spectators were erupting with ‘here we go, here we go’. Bang, other shot through point and OCC won the game deservedly.
A GREAT team effort, well done and thank you to all the spectators.

Osterley CC give British Airways CC a drubbing

Nadeem Chowdhury reports:

The sun blazed down as the much anticipated match between Osterley CC and British Airways CC began on Saturday at Tentelow Lane. An extra spicy encounter as Osterley were fielding 3 ex BACC captains and a total of 7 ex BACC players. Osterley’s Captain Nadeem Chowdhry won the toss asking British Airways Captain Iyaz Khan to bat. The hard hitting Hardeep Khangura made a welcomed return to open the batting and immediately made his intentions clear. Unfortunately a few good shots hit were superbly fielded by Susil Perera and Rizwan Malik, until Shakeel Sajjad had Hardeep smartly caught at first slip by Mandip Sohi, who eventually took 4 outstanding catches in the game. The other end Faisal Khan chipped a ball millimetres away from mid on for four but then was beaten for pace as a searing yorker was fired into the base of middle stump by Aman Buttar and out. With the pressure building, Iyaz Khan came in knowing he had to deliver a captains innings and second ball faced was caught at first slip off another Aman screamer.

Ali Rahim Khan (top scoring with 20) battled hard with an able partner Gurinder Mann (9) but with no runs insight, pressure got to him to be sent back by Ata Akber, who proceeded to take the next two wickets in the same over, finishing with 3 for 10. Inexplicably Kuldeep Northey the classiest and most experienced batsman was sent in at number 9! He showed his magic by smashing a six into the neighbouring bushes, new ball please… Shakeel at the other end was simply too good for another BA returning star in Zahid Khan, trapping him plumb infront of middle stump, ending his nightmare of an innings. A nervous Samin Nazir did not last long and Kuldeep was left stranded not out as the BA innings ended on 64 all out. Shakeel Sajjad lead the players off the field after his devastating 5 for 26.

A quick turnaround between innings with Osterley’s Aman Butter and Mahmud Mirza putting on a quick 20. The BA youngster and star in making Samin Nazir, bowled a peach of a deliver to bowl Mahmud, quickly followed by Aman gloving a ball from Iyaz, saw a new pair batting. BA were hoping to compete but Mano Dharmaraj and Muhummed Qaisar smashed some blistering boundaries to complete a very enjoyable victory by Osterley, scoring 66 in 16 overs, to remain top of Middx Div 1.

BA brought their best but Osterley showed who is BEST.

Osterley’s A boys (Abid, Ata & Aman) too hot for MTSCC.

Image:

Osterley travelled to top of the table MTSCC, who had been scoring close to 300 in the past few weeks, therefore a tough game expected. MTSCC decided to bat, hoping to put a big score on the board and apply the pressure on OCC chasing. Abid started as if he was going to bowl MTSCC out in a few overs as he took 4-20 plus several thick edges not being given outand to add insult to injury, the runs conceded were over the slips. The other end, MTSCC Nirosh blazed away with boundaries all round the ground, hitting a back foot drive for six over the bowlers head. The reply from Ata was swift, with the next ball, knocking the stump out of the ground. Ata was joined by Mr reliable Shakeel and between them taking 3- 18 each, finishing off MTSCC’s big innings threat at 85 all out in 26 overs.

A quick 10 minute change over as the dark clouds hovered over the ground, threatening to spoil Osterley fine bowling efforts. Kavi started with his superb left arm quick swing bowling but Aman and Mudhi (11), fresh from their 20\20 success, built a quick 30 run partnership in 5 overs. Gavas, the skipper came on and took two wickets straightaway but the quick fire 35 from Aman had provided a solid base for Shakeel (10) and Abid (28 not out) to blaze away finishing the game with a huge 6, taking OCC to 88 for 2 in 14 overs.

This result means the top three teams are only 2 points apart with three games to go – let’s hope the weather holds out as OCC entertains British Airways at home next week.

The M&S partnership hits back to win against a strong Southall team

Image:

NADEEM CHOWDHURY REPORTS:
A very hot humid day at Southall led to Southall’s captain Nasir deciding to bat. Salman and Dhutti took full toll of Aman reaching 80 in 8 overs. A gathering of the troops and with the attacked changed, Rizwan and Atta began the counter attack, taking 4 quick wickets. A further two wickets by Shakeel and the Southall innings was in danger of ending below 150 but some superb stroke play by Dahiya. He probably wished he had not hit that ball 5 houses down as the few overs saw Mano and Shakeel wrap up the innings with great spin and swing.

The straightforward chase for 166 was made hard as Wakeel and Mandip fell earlier to clever bowling by Arif and Raheul. 50 a piece by Mano and Shakeel, followed by a Matthew Hayden impression by Mike Denny, smashing the ball to all parts of the ground, left Vinod to hit the winning bound in the 35th over.

Next week home to Hanwell CC but before that, the 20\20 semi final and hopefully a Final waiting for both the 1st and 2nd XI’s at Banstead CC.

Magnificent Mano & Mandip mesmerise Harrow ST Mary’s.

Image:

NADEEM CHOWDHURY REPORTS:
Osterley won the toss and choose to bat first on an unusually sunny day. Harrow St Mary’s Captain Ian alongside Imran opened the bowling, both cut and swung the ball with great control. A couple of catches going down meant Nadeem and Aman got off to a flyer, which was followed up by blistering 30+ a piece from Shakeel, Mano and Mandip. Harrow kept fighting back with wickets from Kunj’s cunning left spinners. OCC’s young guns, Rehul and Kerrar both showed great maturity in their cameo innings, taking the first innings total to 216.

After the outstanding tea, the Harrow openers showed an aggressive intent but accurate bowling from Vinod pegged them back with a couple of wickets. As Soosay and Thakkar pushed on with 25 a piece, on came the menacing ‘M’s. Mandip took a wicket, first ball and finished with 4-20, whilst at the other end Mano’s bail breaking 4-27 finished off Harrow St Mary’s challenge at 129 all out.

Next week we look forward to visiting Southall CC and then on Sunday to the 20\20 semi final at Banstead CC.

OCC 2nd XI spin their way into the Surrey 20\20 semi final and potentially set up a final against OCC’s 1st XI

MATCH REPORT BY NADEEM CHOWDHURY

Captain Nadeem Chowdhry put Reigate Prior CC into bat in a reduced 15 over aside game and with the OCC young guns contributing with 15-20 cameo’s amassing on 134.

Shakeel Muhammad opened the bowling for OCC and was on a hat-trick on his third ball of the match. After three overs, Shakeel had taken 5 wickets for 9 runs with his extra-ordinary spin.

Reigate Prior knew a semi final place was at stake and fought back magnificently, requiring 28 in the last over, which Dave Paddon bowled with great guile.

Both teams agreed the superb curry hand made by Amar Rathore was a great finale to the evening.

5th August will be the semi finals and final – look forward to seeing you all at Banstead CC.

OSTERLEY vs BRITISH AIRWAYS....match report by NADEEM

Image:

Osterley travelled to British Airways for a long awaited match by both sides as there are many old friends and ex team mates. The rain cleared and BA asked Osterley to bat on a wet track. Iqbal with the new ball was a handful, with the ball skidding through or lifting from a length. Some good bowling and poor shot selection, the first big 5 were back with only 50 on the board in 20 overs. Out strode BA’s nightmare from last year – Whacker Wakeel, knick named as KP – Mr unorthodox (Kevin Peterson ). An outstanding partnership of 75 between Aamir and Wakeel played a great part in the BA fielders feeling the pressure, beginning a series of comical fielding errors. There was a lot of healthy banter between Sid (on field) and Mudhi (off field), as expected by mid week team mates. The game was being fought hard and not an inch given by either side until Aamir was trapped into play a sweep by Iyaz (known as Chachagee), ending in a caught and bowled. A few more wickets by Iqbal totalling 6 for 67, meant the last pair of Shakz (Motoring Malik) and Wakeel needing the team to reach 175 for maximum batting points and Wakeel on 90, needing his hundred. Some solid play by Shakz, showing the top order how its done, whilst Whacker completed his mature but blistering 103 not out in only 21 overs. Osterley declared on 188 for 9 off 43 overs.
Our hosts, British Airways, had no tea ordered – what, cricket without tea!! Further bad news for BA as their changing room had been pilfered, meaning no one come onto the field until 6.40PM, instead of the scheduled 6.05PM.
The day’s theme of counter attacking continued, a great first over from Naveed and then an attack on Ata by Anjum at the other end. Spin was introduced as Faisal swung for all he was worth. The introduction of Perera forced him to play straight. Naveed was replaced by Shaja as he was lifting and swinging the ball too much for the batsman to connect and only Anjum who seemed in form was able to connect for a lollipop catch to cover. Aman came on finding a line, length to knockout the middle stump as Fasial tried to invent a shot. Shaja found too much bounce and would have hurt the batsman, so spin of Shakz was introduced, hitting Chachagee in the stomach first ball and the remaining balls were somehow kept out. As the clouds came over, light was offered to the batters and the game was drawn – neither side claiming they were on top but lots of promises for the return game!!!
Off to Birkbeck College CC for the top teams next week.

Image:

Picture 1 – Mohammed Ellahie comes out of retirement to deliver some coaching to new members – Aman Buttar looks on, why amused, you ask him.

Picture 2 - Mandip Sohi shows a perfectly balanced defensive shot – oops, he tells me saw some money on the mat and was just going to pick it up!!!

Picture 3 - Mandip shows how to use the pace of the bowler and work the ball down to third man

Picture 4 - Lastly, keeping an eye on the ‘ball’ and showing Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash don’t have better foot movement, if he was given the chance on ‘come dancing’!!!!

Whacker Wakeel & Magical Mandip smash 40 runs a piece as Osterley wins in only 14 overs

Osterley travelled to Hanwell hoping to bat first on seeing a beautiful batting track but were denied by Hanwell’s Captain A.Price winning the toss and batting. OCC’s usual double AA (Aman & Ata) attack was not available, so the 6.4 ft Naveed fired in some lethal deliveries with Mandip swinging the ball too much to get an edge, meant a lot of playing and missing went on but the two ripped out the top three early on. M.Rhode and A. Ismail frustrated the bowlers with some nice square drives. On came the batsman’s nightmare of Ata’s pace and the flight of Mahmud. Ata clean bowling his 4 victims for 20 and narrowly missing his 5th, as S.Arora went to hook and the ball looping over Perera at short square leg. As reward for taking a nice catch off Mahmud’s bowling, Shakz came on to bowl and was in a generous mood, as G.Lloyd struck half a dozen lusty boundaries. That little partnership was brought to an end with the obligatory run out OCC fielders seem to coax out of the opposition for 114.
Osterley’s middle order opened the batting with Wakeel and Mandip refusing to take singles even when the ball was inches away from the boundary line! Both reach 40 a piece in the first 8 overs even though Sehabaz and Lloyd bowled with good pace, using the bouncy track. Shakeel Sajjad finished off the game with his typically well placed four boundaries in the 14th over.
A special thank you to our international umpire Mike Van Reysen.
We look forward to hosting a top of the table match against MTSCC next week.
